This presents a nice opportunity to sample the music of England’s Alexander Campkin (b 1984) who was headed for a career as a violist until the onset of multiple sclerosis led him to composition. He is a talented choral composer, and I think you’ll be pleased to make his acquaintance. I must have written “bright and fresh” 25 times as I listened, for while the music “depicts a journey from darkness to light” (the composer’s words), the luminous effects are lighter and more bracing than the shimmering and glimmering we hear from so many of his contemporaries. That doesn’t mean he’s glib, either, as you’ll hear in the beautiful `True Love’ (which was performed at his wedding), or in `Calm Me, O Lord’, which churns intensely as sadness and doubt disrupt a placid introduction.

The Phoenix Consort is a British chamber choir of around 20 mixed voices. While they do right by the composer, I come away hoping that the next time I meet Mr Campkin, the choral sound will be warmer and fuller, with sopranos less intent on recreating the bright white tone of boy choristers.
