Luminatus can make an exciting sound, with impressive dynamic variety and expressive palette. Their avowed special interest in combining renaissance polyphony with contemporary music by female composers is admirable, but why present these repertoires in slabs? This anthology features the Missa Ancor che col partire by Philippe de Monte and a fascinating clutch of rare 16th century motets from the likes of Francesco Stivori, Tiburtio Massaino and Ippolito Baccusi. A massive gear-change follows with six recent sacred works composed by women, of which the stand-out is Cecilia McDowall’s Prayer. It may be random programming, with few thematic threads linking the texts of old and new works, but this courageous, audibly enthusiastic and enterprising group takes ownership in committed performances.
