The Durham choir includes unfamiliar anthems by 2 of the University’s graduates; Edward Bairstow and Francis Jackson. Bairstow was organist of York Minster and Jackson was his pupil, who succeeded him at the Minster. Together they occupied the post for 68 years!
It is nice to hear unfamiliar pieces from both composers, in particular Bairstow’s Know ye not and Jackson’s magnificent Up to those bright and gladsome hills.
Many will be familiar with The King of Love my Shepherd is. A plus is the first complete recording of the short canticles by Amy Beach, which would prove useful for church choirs.
