Here is something quite different from Osgood’s Magnificat – a selection of varied short chamber works for a variety (but by no means unusual) of ensembles. They reveal a genuine creative figure, very much ‘of today’, a composer able – and quite naturally – to inhabit through a communicative language that is wholly approachable without becoming predictably obvious. None of these works is on a broad scale – we find that in Osgood’s Magnificat – and the attentive listener will quite soon find that each work, especially its sectionalised movements, is wholly organic, and is devoted to exploring the myriad expression inherent in the inspirational initial ideas. In short, this collection introduces us to a genuine composer who is above all practical in applying his inspiration to whatever is required of, and emanating from, the ideas themselves. I found the Cello Sonata to be quite compelling and I recommend the entire collection unreservedly.
