Listen or buy this album:
This very short CD showcases the work of Will Sims and his choir at Robinson College, Cambridge, via three anthems by Gerald Finzi. God is Gone Up is probably the most well-known of those from Finzi’s Op. 27 set and here receives a reading that matches the composer’s apposite word-setting. This provides the sandwich-filling between My Lovely One and Welcome Sweet and Sacred Feast, both of which receive here an injection of new life in string arrangements by Peter Hayward, played by Cambridge musicians from Robinson College and the university’s wider musical community. The arrangements should be welcomed as they are very much in the spirit of Finzi and expand the repertoire for choral directors looking to schedule pieces with string accompaniment. All is done with assurance and commitment.
