Clive Osgood’s 10-movement setting of the Stabat Mater offers an accessible account of the ancient Latin text in which the composer’s obvious gift for melody coupled to vibrant harmony are on display. Soloist Grace Davidson is on excellent form, partnered by the sweet-toned solo violin of Jack Liebeck. But in yet another recording, it is Rupert Gough’s excellent Royal Holloway Choir who really steal the show, with their clear, fresh tone. At only 33 minutes’ duration, the CD might have benefitted from some more pieces by Osgood, for his music is attractive and should be better known.
